Summary

Writer JASON AARON & artist r。m。GURA return to the stark and brutal world of THE GODDAMNED for the long-awaited second chapter of their biblical-noir epic。

"。。。the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men。 And they bore children to them。。。" Genesis 6:4

In the time before the Great Flood, the world of man is a place of wanton violence and unbridled depravity。 But hidden high atop a mountain, there is a very different sort of world。 One without men。 Here the holy sisters at a secret nunnery live in paradise, a new Eden, rearing their flock of orphaned girls to embrace their future as blessed Brides of the Sons of God。 But when Sharri and Jael, two girls on the cusp of flowering, uncover what it truly means to become a Bride, they realize there's only one way to escape the bonds of matrimony: run like hell。

Gorgeous art, fantastic world-building, and great villains。 Not to miss。

Liked this one more than volume one I think。 The girls were better main characters than Cain was, little less broody tough guy。 The ending was a little to easy。 The art is amazing。

What if Robert E。 Howard wrote his own version of the Bible for Meta Hurlant? If that question turns you on, you’ll love this。 I did not。

If you're pissed about the Catholic Church sexual abuse cases, Aaron and Guera provide a cathartic "biblical-noir" tale about two girls who are being groomed at a nunnery as the child brides for angels above but who decide to run and -- when cornered -- fight like all goddamn。 It's a bloody and brutal tale of friendship, love, and perseverance。 And revenge。 A goddamn arkful of revenge。 If you're pissed about the Catholic Church sexual abuse cases, Aaron and Guera provide a cathartic "biblical-noir" tale about two girls who are being groomed at a nunnery as the child brides for angels above but who decide to run and -- when cornered -- fight like all goddamn。 It's a bloody and brutal tale of friendship, love, and perseverance。 And revenge。 A goddamn arkful of revenge。 。。。more

This is absolutely me-bait and I enjoyed it and I'll keep reading it, but even I can admit that this isn't, like, good。Still and all, it's grimdark biblical hyperviolence that has a lot of Nephilim shit in it, so if that's something that tickles your potentially adolescent sacrilegious fancy, maybe it's for you。Feels like it's maybe enjoying it's free pass to make women say and do horrific things to each other a liiiiiitttle too much, tho。 A guilty pleasure, probably something I wouldn't recomme This is absolutely me-bait and I enjoyed it and I'll keep reading it, but even I can admit that this isn't, like, good。Still and all, it's grimdark biblical hyperviolence that has a lot of Nephilim shit in it, so if that's something that tickles your potentially adolescent sacrilegious fancy, maybe it's for you。Feels like it's maybe enjoying it's free pass to make women say and do horrific things to each other a liiiiiitttle too much, tho。 A guilty pleasure, probably something I wouldn't recommend to anybody I know。In closing, there's a caveman named Fucktor in this for one page。 The Bible: Now with more Fucktor。 。。。more

I liked the art a bit more than the overall story, which is unusual for Jason Aaron。 It tied up well though。 Having vignettes that take place before the Biblical Flood is a fantastic idea for story。 I hope they keep making more。

Still sacrilegious as fuck and it's glorious。 A line from the bible fleshed out to demonstrate the misogyny and grossness of the old testament。 Still sacrilegious as fuck and it's glorious。 A line from the bible fleshed out to demonstrate the misogyny and grossness of the old testament。 。。。more

What a genius Jason Aaron is。 Take the bible genesis, and look at it from a high fantasy / terror perspective。 Then, do it all over again and even better than before。 This is a continuation of the story of the pre-flood world from the bible that Aaron and Guera started in The Goddamned vol1, and in my opinion it is even better。 The pages turned way too fast to appreciate all that they can offer, but I just couldn't put it down。 This volume has a higher range than the previous one, more color var What a genius Jason Aaron is。 Take the bible genesis, and look at it from a high fantasy / terror perspective。 Then, do it all over again and even better than before。 This is a continuation of the story of the pre-flood world from the bible that Aaron and Guera started in The Goddamned vol1, and in my opinion it is even better。 The pages turned way too fast to appreciate all that they can offer, but I just couldn't put it down。 This volume has a higher range than the previous one, more color variation, and very interesting dynamics。 I loved every word in it, but careful, it is not an easy read in the sense that it is brutal and mind-bending。 。。。more

In 2015, Jason Aaron and R。M。 Guéra, who previously collaborated on the Vertigo comic book Scalped, reunited for a new ongoing series of stark and brutal biblical noir: The Goddamned。 Although he renounced religion after being raised Southern Baptist, Aaron maintains a fascination towards religion and faith。 The Goddamned presents a brutal, nihilistic take to the story of Noah’s Ark。 It’s not so much a deep, intellectual discussion on religion as it is a grim fantasy featuring monsters and cleav In 2015, Jason Aaron and R。M。 Guéra, who previously collaborated on the Vertigo comic book Scalped, reunited for a new ongoing series of stark and brutal biblical noir: The Goddamned。 Although he renounced religion after being raised Southern Baptist, Aaron maintains a fascination towards religion and faith。 The Goddamned presents a brutal, nihilistic take to the story of Noah’s Ark。 It’s not so much a deep, intellectual discussion on religion as it is a grim fantasy featuring monsters and cleaving, but it’s a masterful title that delivers twisted takes on biblical tales, leaving readers hoping for a new arc。Cut to five years later。。。Please click here for my full review。 。。。more

Two girls rightly look at this ghastly mess of an existence and decide to Thelma and Louise it the fuck outta there, Old Testament-style! But God’s warriors are hot on their heels to ensure that they are not put asunder… Jason Aaron and RM Guera are back for a second volume of their grim, gory and grimy reimagining of Genesis, The Goddamned, a mere five years after the first, and, Lordy, it wasn’t worth the wait! The story just wasn’t engaging。 That’s the only reason I didn’t like the book - but it’s a pretty big one! Girls run, dickheads chase, fighting, then the ending。 Bo-ring。 The characters aren’t interesting, I’m over Aaron/Guera’s interpretation of an evil, pseudo-subversive Bible vision, and nothing memorable or gripping happens。 And I say that with disappointment because I loved their previous collaboration, Scalped, but it’s clear that Jason Aaron has really fallen hard from those heights since then。 It’s been a minute since his last great book (from another Image series that he appears to have abandoned, Southern Bastards) and, unfortunately The Goddamned, a series that started out mediocre, has only gotten worse in the interim years。 I don’t know why such gross offspring are produced when angels mate with humans, and maybe I’d know if I was steeped in Christian bullshit, but it’d’ve been nice if Aaron had offered up something of an explanation instead of nothing。 I guess to imply God/the angels are grotesque, in keeping with how they view Christianity in this series? And the brides are barely pubescent girls because Mary, right, so God’s a creep or something? Eh。 Gratuitous grossness does nothing for me。 I don’t like Christianity either, or any religion for that matter, but I don’t have the same bone to pick with it that Aaron/Guera seem to。 The tone just feels childish to me, like teenagers who are trying to be edgy。 The way Aaron writes the serpent/demon was fun, as was the sheer nihilism of that finale, and I LOVED Guera’s art。 He’s the opposite of Aaron and has only gotten better with time。 If you’re as much a fan of his artwork as I am, he’s basically the sole reason you’re gonna pick up this book。 From the way it starts raining heavily at the end of this book, it’s clear what the next Ark is going to be in this series, which, at the rate they’re producing these, should be in 2026 or so, assuming there’s an audience still there to read it。 Meanwhile though, there’s The Virgin Brides, a pointless and instantly forgettable addition that could very likely end the interest of many readers in this increasingly goddamned dreary series。 。。。more

Oh, I've missed this series。 We've moved on a few generations, however you count those for the sketchier bits of the Old Testament, but the premise remains the same – taking Bible stories literally, then constructing a world in which they were true, but one as far as possible from all those sappy Sunday school murals。 Not that the focus this time ever gets much play in scriptural studies, being more popular on the occult fringe: the nephilim, the offspring of the angelic matings with human women Oh, I've missed this series。 We've moved on a few generations, however you count those for the sketchier bits of the Old Testament, but the premise remains the same – taking Bible stories literally, then constructing a world in which they were true, but one as far as possible from all those sappy Sunday school murals。 Not that the focus this time ever gets much play in scriptural studies, being more popular on the occult fringe: the nephilim, the offspring of the angelic matings with human women recounted in Genesis 6。 Now, I'd reached a point where in horror stories I was getting as bored of the nephilim as I had of vampires, simply through overuse, but this isn't yet another story about their influence lingering down the millennia; this is their birth, and the society which brought that about。 A cult, in short, with girls being groomed until they're old enough (by the most meagre, yet not historically inaccurate understanding of 'old enough') and then sent up the mountain as somewhere between tribute, brood-mares and food for the angels up top。 Whom we don't see; the human society which supports them is the main focus, and every bit as horrific as all the other human societies which do terrible things to their young while telling them what a great honour it is。 Guera makes the landscapes look absolutely gorgeous, which only emphasises the awfulness of the people moving through them, and ensures we're absolutely on the side of the girls who, as they 'flower', realise they have to make a break for it。 I just hope the creative team pick up the rate at which they're getting these stories out, because I'd love to see them make it up to the New Testament, and do the Annunciation the way it should be done – in the style of Alien。 。。。more

Caveat: as I am getting the comic in single issue form, I have only read up until #3。Following the gritty example set in the first series, "Before the Flood", this one does one better and counterpoises a relative paradise where the Brides grow up, with the actual horrors above and below it。 The Brides are being prepared for the Sons of God, the Angels, I suspect as depicted in Hebrew mythology (we have not seen them yet, as of issue #3), that is to say pretty terrifying and dangerous。 From that Caveat: as I am getting the comic in single issue form, I have only read up until #3。Following the gritty example set in the first series, "Before the Flood", this one does one better and counterpoises a relative paradise where the Brides grow up, with the actual horrors above and below it。 The Brides are being prepared for the Sons of God, the Angels, I suspect as depicted in Hebrew mythology (we have not seen them yet, as of issue #3), that is to say pretty terrifying and dangerous。 From that union, the Nephilim are born, and as such, I believe this series to be a prequel to the previous one (where Cain is looking for a Nephilim to kill him)。This is really the Bible or Torah meets Heavy Metal Magazine and the maddest of Mad Max, just without technology。 It is weird, violent, apocalyptic, and all set in the background of mostly undefiled nature, rampant nature。 。。。more

。。。more
